In 1942 fishmongers Charles and Frank Purley (born 1910 in Twickenham), fed up with the high cost of ice, developed a refrigeration system to keep their fresh fish chilled. And so Lec (Longford Engineering Company Ltd.) was born. The brand quickly became a firm favourite and today, over 60 years later, Lec is still the refrigeration appliance brand of choice in many UK households.

By 1960 only 13% of UK homes had a refrigerator, compared to 96% in the USA. In 2005 Lec became part of Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, owner of Stoves, Belling and New World cooking brands and with a reputation for quality and reliability that is unrivalled.
